First Time to IBC?
Like visiting any big tradeshow, you’ll want to do the following before you leave:
- Download the mobile app or get acquainted with the layout of the exposition by printing maps from their website.
- Plan your transportation to and from the show so you won’t have hiccups. If you’re from another part of the world, the names of the streets can be confusing. Taxis can be expensive. I’d highly recommend getting a multi-day transportation ticket when you get to Centraal Station. You can go to the desk for a 3-day (or more) ticket. They do not sell them in the machines (or at least they didn’t in 2019, the last time I was in Amsterdam).
- Register for events before the show. This will help you with your schedule and ensure you will not miss out because an event sells out.
- Put together a schedule of things you want to see. Time will always get away from you if you don’t have a plan.
- Get a Dutch phrasebook or translation app. Almost everyone in Amsterdam you will meet will speak English, but you’ll want to translate your dinner menu, street signs, and so on, primarily if you stray away from the tourist areas.
- Cell Phones. It’s sometimes cheaper to pick up a SIM card and some minutes for your phone at the airport than for international service on your American contract. Of course, check with your cell phone provider, as international packages can differ.
- Bikes. Learn about bike rules so you’re not run over on the street. If you think I’m exaggerating, I am NOT.
- Be a tourist. Make sure you check out the beauty, history, museums, art, and cuisine of Amsterdam! I’m a big fan of Indonesian food and you can find some amazing Indonesian cuisine in Amsterdam. Rent a bike and ride out of the city if you have time. Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities on the planet!
