Burning Question: How do I improve Performance in DaVinci Resolve? https://www.toolfarm.com/tutorial/improve-performance-resolve/ Fri, 25 Mar 2022 20:58:25 +0000 https://www.toolfarm.com/?post_type=tutorial&p=76918 Learn several simple ways to improve performance in DaVinci Resolve, from using Proxy Mode to enabling Smart Render Cache.

The post Burning Question: How do I improve Performance in DaVinci Resolve? appeared first on .

]]>
Everyone wants to improve performance, am I right? I have a 5 year old iMac and DaVinci Resolve chugs on it. If you’re in the same boat, we collected tips from pros like Frame.io, Ripple Training, Chris’ Tutorials, and more, to help you get Resolve running smoothly on your older or non-robust computer.

My screenshots are from Resolve Studio 16. I am unable to run Resolve Studio 17 because my OS and computer are getting old. But, this is the reason I’m writing this article, so those of you with older computers can maximize performance of your software.

To summarize, here are the top tips.

1. Adjust your Playback Settings

In brief, open your preferences and click on the Users tab.

  • Hide UI Overlays. When checked, this hides onscreen controls.
  • Minimize interface updates during playback. This setting curtails updates of the UI while you’re playing footage.

You can also set Performance Mode to Automatic, Manual, or Disable it completely. The default setting is Automatic, which optimizes Sizing, Decode Quality, and Image Processing. If you set it to Manual, you will have the option to manually set Optimized Sizing, Optimized Decode Quality, and Optimized Image Processing.

Proxy Mode

2. Proxy Mode

Proxy Mode allows users to downscale the media as it’s playing. To enable it, go to the Playback Menu > Proxy Mode, and then chose Half Resolution, Quarter Resolution, or off.

At Half Resolution it will look a bit fuzzier but if you’re working at 4K, you won’t notice much when you’re working. Quarter Resolution will show even less resolution, of course, but will playback even faster.

Smart Render Cache

3. Smart Render Cache

Your video files can be really large. Smart Render Cache lets the computer decide what to store in the cache. This will let you play clips smoothly, even with lots of effects applied.

To enable it, go to Playback > Render Cache > Smart. The Default setting is none. There is also an option for User.

In the video below, John’s Films explains it clearly. Jump ahead to 07:40 Render Cache settings to get to it directly.

4. Keep your software updated

I know, I’m one to talk. I am still running Resolve Studio 16 because my OS isn’t up to date and my computer is old. But, if you can update your software, do it! Engineers are always tweaking the code to improve performance and squashing bugs. DaVinci Resolve Studio 17.4.4 was released last week. This update includes:

  • Improved DaVinci Neural Engine performance on Macs with AMD GPUs.
  • Improved performance for clips with Fusion effects.
  • General performance and stability improvements.

5. Get yourself a Speed Editor Keyboard

Okay, this will not improve Resolve Studio’s performance, per se, but it will improve your workflow! Resolve users LOVE It!

More Tips on Improving Performance in DaVinci Resolve

We’ve collected tips from professional colorists and editors who use Resolve. A lot of them have the same tips, but this means that they are proven! Everything below pertains to Resolve 17.

5 Tips To Improve Performance in DaVinci Resolve

Jason Bowdach wrote an article at Frame.io on the topic as it applies to DaVinci Resolve.

Jason’s article includes tips on:

  1. Performance Mode & other playback tweaks
  2. Proxy Mode
  3. Create optimized media
  4. Caching
  5. Combine and conquer

How to maximize the performance of DaVinci Resolve

Symon Windham explains how to make tweaks to settings to improve performance. He covers adjustment of project settings, Render in Place, Timeline Proxy Mode, Render Cache, and more.

Davinci Resolve Video Lagging? TRY THIS!!

Jay Lippman, always a great source of DaVinci Resolve information, shares how to turn on the Smart Render Cache to speed up playback.

Another video on the Render Cache, this time from Green Goat Productions. This will save you time and save space on your hard drive. He suggests turning Render Cache Color Output off for a clip that is giving you trouble. Then, turn on Node Cache for the single node. Don’t get it? Below, watch it explained. Jay Lippman also covers this in the tutorial above but sometimes it’s useful to have things explained slightly differently.

RE:Vision Effects has a couple mini tutorials that offer quick tips on how to make After Effect V22 and Multi-Frame Rendering (MFR) “more robust when any temporal processing effect requesting multiple input frames is used.”

The first tutorial covers how to check your memory and then tell AE that you have less memory than you actually have (and why you want to do this). The second tutorial has suggestions for what to do if you have issues with MFR while using RE:Vision Effects plug-ins. The third tutorial discusses some variables that can affect rendering speed given the new context of Multi-Frame Rendering. And the final tutorial covers Multi-Frame Rendering with Video Gogh.

Note: These tips apply to DE:Noise, Effections, FieldsKit, RE:Fill, RE:Flex, RE:Map, RE:Match, RSMB, Twixtor and Video Gogh.

AE and MFR – Check your memory

In this Mini tutorial, we will see how to check your memory and how to tell AE that you have less memory than you actually have. These suggestions are offered to make After Effects v22 (and over) and MFR more robust when any temporal processing effect requesting multiple input frames is used. There are some known issues with caching in AE for this scenario at this time. Due to these issues in AE 22, we will offer you some less drastic suggestions, than turning off MFR, although… each mini tutorial will address a specific issue.

*Note: Issue with Analysis and Preview Cache when Idle fixed in AE 22.1.1 public beta

AE and MFR – Real Basics

In this mini tutorial, we will see a quick suggestion to make After Effects v22 (and over) and MFR more robust when any temporal processing effect requesting multiple input frames is used. There are some known issues with caching in AE for this scenario at this time. Due to these issues in AE 22, we will offer you some less drastic suggestions, than turning off MFR, although…

*Note: Issue with Analysis and Preview Cache when Idle fixed in AE 22.1.1 public beta.

Multi-Frame Rendering – Variables that affect processing time

In this tutorial, we discuss some variables that can affect rendering speed given the new context of Multi-Frame Rendering.

** This tutorial uses After Effects 18 public beta, the methods we describe are subject to change.

** Upcoming update in AE 22 coming soon as some of the UI changed from the public beta.

** Note: Known issue, if you see artifacts on certain systems with dual GPU, note that to benefit from 2 or more GPU with our tools you might need to turn off the Hardware acceleration checkbox in Import Preferences. Also Note: Preferences are not carried over with project settings if you render on a different machine.

Multi-Frame Rendering and Video Gogh

This tutorial explains what to do if you are using Video Gogh and working with a version of After Effects that has the ability to do Multi-Frame Rendering.

**This tutorial uses After Effects v22 public beta, the method we describe is subject to change.

Victor Andreyenkov offers a few tips to optimize your workflow in Substance Painter to make your CPU’s life a little easier, but not compromise the quality of your work.

Here’s an excerpt from his article:

When you use the Ctrl+S combination the project file archive can be fragmented a lot. While this will not lead to project file corruption this can introduce empty spaces in the project file which leads to an unnecessary increase in file size. However, there is a function in Substance Painter that rebuilds the project file compacting its content – Save and Compact.

Depending on how actively you work on your project it should be used from time to time. It does defragment data within a single file. I would recommend using it each time you save a project file before closing it.

Victor has lots more tips like these. Read all of them by clicking the read more button below.

C4D Spotlight: Using Command Line in Cinema 4D https://www.toolfarm.com/tutorial/command-line-cinema-4d/ Thu, 06 May 2021 17:04:56 +0000 https://www.toolfarm.com/?post_type=tutorial&p=65553 Command Line allows you to render Cinema 4D projects without opening the program interface and utilize that power in rendering. Command Line allows you to free up Cinema 4D and render Cinema 4D projects without opening the program interface. So, why is this useful? Because you can use that extra power for rendering!

Cinema 4D artists use Command Line primarily when rendering projects with a render farm or in conjunction with any third-party render management software, such as Deadline. In other words, you can use multiple workstations and hardware to render your jobs, through a server connection.

For more about render farms, see: In Depth: Render Farms / Network Rendering / Distributed Rendering.

Command Line Installation and Setup

Below is a list of things to know before you use Cinema 4D from the Command Line for the first time.

  • Make sure that Cinema 4D is licensed on your machine. Otherwise, you need to reference a C4D License Server with valid command line licenses.
  • During Cinema 4D installation, the Commandline application is installed in the same folder. When you launch Commandline, the program takes you to a setup page. Find additional details on setup here: Cinema 4D Commandline Installation page in Cineversity.
  • In addition, the first time you run the Commandline renderer, your machine needs to be connected to your My Maxon user account or via the License Server.

Command Line Parameters

On Cineversity, Maxon has a handy list of Command Line Flags to help you set up your render. See Command Line Parameters.

Intro to Deadline Using Redshift for Cinema 4D

In this tutorial, Brandon Clements of Glass Hand Studios explains how they use Deadline with Redshift and Cinema 4D, with Command Line.

Team Render

“Team Render is a similar thing, however, it is a server/client application for network rendering which is designed for small workgroups of computers, rather than a dedicated Render Farm,” explains Craig Whitfield, Enterprise Technical Support at Maxon. With the same version of Cinema 4D installed on the computers on a local network, rendering is as simple as clicking a single button. More information on Team Render.

Who wants to render faster? Everyone!! We’ve covered this topic a bit before but with Team Render for Cinema 4D, you can set up a render farm quickly and easily. So, what is Team Render?

It allows distribution of frames for animation and buckets for still images to multiple computers on the network.

For bigger studios Team Render Server combines the advantages of a traditional client-server architecture which allows users to control all the render jobs via a web interface with Team Render’s decentralized data exchange. Team Render Server lets you directly upload, monitor and control your network rendering jobs, and view the log status messages from the server and all clients.

Maxon

Team Render replaced Net Render in R15+ and is now fully integrated into Cinema 4D and very easy to set up.

Watch Cinema 4D Team Render | Cineversity Maxon’s Help Docs on Team Render

Be also sure to check Team Rendering Troubleshooting if you run into any problems.

CINEMA 4D – Render: Team Render (Setup)

This is a quick visual guide from Maxon, walking you through the steps of setting up Team Render.

After watching the video above, check out Cinema 4D Team Render Series from Cineversity. Rick Barrett of Maxon explains, “In this tutorial series, you’ll learn how to install, configure, use and troubleshoot Team Render. Within this introductory tutorial, you’ll learn about Team Render licensing as well as various implementations that allow you to manage Team Render from within Cinema 4D or via a browser-based user interface connected to a central server. You’ll learn the advantages and disadvantages of each Team Render technique, and recommended strategies for various types of users.”

Team Render Helpers

Team Render Notifier

From Maxon Labs, this is a plug-in that lets you know when a Team Render job is done, via mobile phone, email, or social media such as Twitter, etc.

Are your Plug-ins not showing in Team Render?

If your plug-ins work in previous Cinema 4D installations and also in previous Team Render installations, but don’t show up in the Team Render client, there’s a simple fix.

Check the old path default path, which is the plugin’s sub-folder inside your Cinema 4D application folder.

To fix the issue, open the menu File inside your Team Render client. Then, go to Preferences > Plugins > Search Path and enter your plugin folder manually.
